GPRS (General Packet Radio Service)
This technology offers Internet Protocol-based
packet transmission at a much higher bandwidth than the currently
available GSM (global system for mobile communications) transmission
technology. The high-speed, low-cost connectivity of GPRS
has transformed the telematics market, since the customer
pays only for the data transferred, and not the time on-line.
Comparison
- Our GPRS system automatically updates
with a vehicles position every 2 minutes. Our communication
for 3 years costs just £499!
- The equivilant 2 minute update on an
older SMS system, (based on 5p per locate
for example) would cost you, over a 3 year period, something
in the region of £39,420!
GPRS is used to communicate with our Vehicle Data Units
to give low cost, near real time tracking. It is also used
in our Mobile Office Units to access and update back-end
office applications, send and receive job information, capture
proof of delivery signatures and transfer files and images,
in an instant.
The limited message length (160 characters)
of SMS (Short Message Service) and the slow transfer rate
of a data call over GSM have limited communications between
the mobile worker and the office. Now GPRS has increased the
speed of transfer, yet reduced the cost. Our systems do retain
the facility to use the former technologies, so in outlying
areas where GPRS coverage may be weak, SMS or data call can
still get through. This would be important in situations where
the ability to locate a vehicle is vital. |
